Matcha is a special whole green tea from Japan that was originally cultivated by zen monks for tea ceremonies. The difference from other green tea is that Matcha uses the entire ground leaves, this allows you to consume all the nutritional benefits.
 
Matcha is grown in the shade which allows for more amino acids to be present in the leaves. These amino acids give that relaxed state of alertness that we love from fine tea.

 
One cup of Matcha has as much antioxidants as 10 cups of regular green tea which can greatly reduce the effect of free radicals on the body with even just a cup a day. Consuming antioxidants can help restore and preserve the body’s general wellness and promote longevity.

Zen Buddhist monks are to blame for the coming into being of this wonderful preparation of  Camellia Sinensis, otherwise known as green tea. As part of ritual, they grew green tea for ceremonial and meditative use that enabled them to become more centred. 


Green tea was first cultivated "sencha" or under the full power of the sun but was later on grown "matcha" or under shade which allowed it to produce higher levels of antioxidants and l-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and calm. We're not sure if the monks purposely grew under the shade to increase the l-theanine but we do know that the synergy of caffeine and l-theanine is what gives Matcha it's unique effects on the mind and body.
